The Man with the Red Tattoo
by Raymond Benson |
The Story |
The
body of Kyoko McMahon is found onboard a flight to London. At almost
exactly the same time her mother, father and elder sister are also found
dead in their home in a suburb of Tokyo.Bond is sent by 'M' to investigate whilst accompanying the British Prime Minister to protect him against Yoshida Goro a Japanese mafia boss who is believed to be planning a terrorist attack. |
Tiger
Tanaka and Reiko Tamura from the Japanese Public Security & Intelligence
Agency come to meet Bond on his arrival in Japan. Tanaka informs him
of how the McMahon family had deep connections with mafia boss Yoshida
Goro - the so-called man with the red tattoo - and how Goro was deeply
interested in the family's pharmaceuticals business. He also tells Bond
about Mayumi, McMahon's youngest daughter who had left home after arguing
with her father and whose whereabouts are no longer known. And so Bond
begins his investigations in Tokyo.Bond and Tanaka make their way to the McMahon family home, where Bond's attention is drawn by a number of unusual mosquitoes flying around the pond. |
Bond's
investigations draw him and Reiko into ever more danger. While they
are investigating the killing of Mayumi's ex-boyfriend in Shinjuku they
are attacked by two thugs on motorbikes. At the Thkiji fish market one
of the thugs pulls a gun and as he flees, Bond gives chase, only to
lose him in the Kabuki theatre. That night Bond is called out by a mystery man, yet as soon as he enters the building he is hit on the head and knocked unconscious. Tied to a chair and beaten, he is only just able to make a lucky escape and flee to another room where he finds slides of mosquitoes and a mass of documents to be sent to an address in Hokkaido. |
Bond
later recalls that while he was being beaten he overheard talk of "Meeting
in Kamakura" and sets off with Tanaka. At Kamakura they catch sight
of a suspicious group of three men in front of the great Buddha including
one very short man with a balding head who bears a remarkable resemblance
to the mythical Japanese creature, the Kappa.Bond and Reiko take the overnight train "Cassiopeia" to Hokkaido. The two of them are relaxing in the suite at the front of the train, when the Kappa releases killer mosquitoes into the room, one of which bites Reiko on the arm. |
The
train makes an emergency stop in the Seikan tunnel, but as Bond climbs
out to chase the Kappa he is dealt a heavy blow and passes out. He recovers
only to find himself bound and suspended from the roof of the tunnel
with the train approaching. Missing danger by a whisker Bond whips out
his miniature knife and slices through the rope just missing the oncoming
train. |
Bond,
who is searching for Mayumi in the Sapporo soap-land, relates all that
has happened so far before making his way up to Yoshida Goro's hideout
at the Noboribetsu hot-spring resort. Fending off a violent attack from
Goro's henchmen he sneaks into their hideout and finds a breeding facility
for thousands and thousands of killer mosquitoes.Bond is captured by two machine-gun wielding underlings and led to a room with a large screen, whereon appears Yoshida Goro himself. Goro goes on to explain his plan to release the killer mosquitoes at the G8 summit on Naoshima and throw the world into chaos. Moments before Bond and Mayumi are plunged into the tank of mosquitoes Bond uses a miniature bomb to escape from the facility and give his captors the slip. The stage is set for the final show-down at the G8 summit on Naoshima, to where Bond travels next... >>To the Naoshima story |
